You should play Splatoon with your family
Usually, my younger siblings will wait until I’m done with work—they’re in an earlier time zone than me, so they’re polite—and then the group chat will light up: “Bang.” “Snap.” “Snap.”
This is our shorthand for “it’s time to play” Sprague Escape 3”.
I’m not what you would call a gamer, but I did buy a Nintendo Switch in 2020. That’s how it all started. I am the oldest of five children and most of my younger siblings love video games. To bond, I started hanging out with them via FaceTime while we played games ANIMAL CROSSING Together. In 2022, one of my brothers got Sprague Escape 3. Eventually, most of us did.Now the four of us (and my brother’s significant other) play Splatoon Together.
Part of the reason I’m writing this is because of some complaints from my younger siblings
Our pandemic family video game party never really ended, so now I’m seriously keeping track of the time Splatoon. For those unfamiliar, it’s a third-person shooter, but a family-friendly game; the idea is to draw as much space as possible on the map. The story appears to be set in a future where there are no mammals, including humans. We play as squid-like Inklings swimming in the paint. You might get killed by another player during a match, but then you’ll be reincarnated.
My siblings and I were scattered across the United States, and we didn’t spend a lot of time together in person. But ever since we started banging together, we’ve been hanging out on FaceTime a few times a week. We have developed a whole family lore. I tried to explain it and found it completely incomprehensible. Trust me, it’s a lot of fun.
Part of the reason I’m writing this is because my younger siblings have some complaints that they want me to abuse my position of power(?) on the site in order to vent them out. There are currently nine items on the list, but I’m sure they’ll soon think of other things to complain about.
I’ll just broadcast one: When we all play together, it’s annoying to schedule games together because the team is four people and we tend to be five. So what usually happens is one of us starts playing. Then, once they play a game, they can be “audited” so the rest of us sit in, which means we’re on the next game. It would be great if we could find a more efficient way to do this so that one of us doesn’t have to play alone while the others wait.
I’ve never been a video game fan per se. Mostly, I play them to hang out with friends.I play counter strike In college I hung out with my friends a lot, so I wouldn’t embarrass myself, but I wouldn’t say I was good. When I lived in New York after college, video games were a fun way to hang out with my downstairs neighbors after get off work. Now, they are a bonding moment as brothers and sisters.
We don’t really plan ahead, which means sometimes not everyone can make it. But it’s nice to get a text message that just says “splat,” which means “I love you, let’s hang out.”
