Ring launches a new battery-powered doorbell with 3D motion detection and improved visuals
Ring has announced an update to its popular Battery Doorbell Plus outdoor camera. The Battery Doorbell Pro is upgraded in almost every way, as is usually the case when companies add “Pro” to the end of their name.
Ring says the new model is the “most advanced battery-powered doorbell” yet, with features that even exceed those of a wired doorbell. It has radar-driven 3D motion detection, which is also included in the company’s Stick Up Cam Pro. Also known as “bird’s eye view,” this technology tracks the path of an object through the camera’s field of view so you can monitor where your visitors are going and the route they took to get there.
It’s coupled with algorithms that set more granular and discrete motion alerts, so you don’t get a notification every time a cat or shadow crosses your yard. You also get a feature called Bird’s Eye View, which turns this information into a series of points on an aerial image of your property.
The visual effects have been upgraded. The camera records 1546p HD+ video and has some upgrades for even clearer images. Ring says the doorbell’s motion picture processing and efficient compression “deliver lifelike color and clarity, whether you’re watching in Live View or a video recorded the night before.” For the latter point, there’s a new app called ” New tool for “Low Light Aiming” that delivers “crisp color” video even in the dark.
The Ring Battery Doorbell Pro also includes noise-canceling algorithms so you can actually hear who’s at the door, not just a truck passing by. As the name suggests, it’s powered by a rechargeable battery rather than being spliced into your home’s electrical system. Ring is owned by Amazon, so you get Alexa functionality and Echo Show integration. The company also really wants you to sign up for its Ring Alarm Pro subscription plan to get cloud storage, package alerts, and backup network in the event of a power outage.
If you’re hesitant about Ring products because of where your data might go, the company recently walked back its police-friendly stance on video sharing. Amazon said its Ring home doorbell units will no longer acquiesce to police requests for video doorbell and monitor recordings without warrants.
The doorbell will be released on March 6 for $230, and pre-orders start today. Ring Alarm Pro subscription costs $20 per month or $200 per year.
