Avatar visual effects workers vote to unionize
A group of visual effects artists working on the “Avatar” movies have voted to form a union. Fifty-seven of 88 eligible VFX employees at TCF US Productions 27, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios, voted to unionize in the National Labor Relations Board election. Nineteen workers voted against the effort, with two votes invalid.
TCF US Productions 27 is not the primary visual effects company working on the Avatar series. That’s Weta FX, which employs most of the more than 1,000 people working on these projects. However, some insiders pointed out hollywood reporter The bargaining unit is noteworthy because it’s “the core team responsible for the film’s creator and director, Jim Cameron.” “They’re not necessarily impressive in terms of scale, but they are impressive in terms of impact.”
Unless management and labor object, the workers will join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). They will follow visual effects artists from Marvel and Walt Disney Studios (both companies voted unanimously to unionize) in organizing events with IATSE. Workers at visual effects company DNEG in British Columbia have also unionized.
