Australia to deploy autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft to fight bushfires
The Australian Government’s recent announcement of A$3 million in funding for AMSL Aero’s Vertiia marks a major milestone in advancing bushfire suppression technology.
Hailed as the world’s most efficient long-range zero-emission electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, Vertiia is poised to revolutionize firefighting operations with its innovative capabilities.
Cooperative Research Center Program (CRC-P) funding will facilitate the development of a remotely piloted version of Vertiia to enhance its ability to autonomously fight bushfires. This investment underlines the Government’s commitment to using cutting-edge technology to enhance firefighting and improve firefighter safety.
Collaboration and innovation
AMSL Aero will work tirelessly to realize this vision, working with respected partners including the University of Sydney, Mission Systems and Pay’s Air Service. Their goal is to jointly develop and deploy a fleet of autonomous vertical take-off and landing aircraft capable of effectively spraying retardants and watering fires, thereby reducing reliance on traditional methods and minimizing risks to firefighters.
