Arturia adds 88-key option to its KeyLab Essential mk3 series of MIDI controllers

Arturia has just released the KeyLab Essential 88 mk3, the bigger sibling of its previously released product. As the name suggests, this is a full-size 88-note controller that allows you to play the entire note range of the piano simultaneously. No need to change octave here.

Like the other products in the KeyLab Essential series, the 88 mk3 is designed to be an economical alternative to the flagship KeyLab controller. It’s solidly built and has semi-weighted keys, but is a little less premium than the standard KeyLab 88. The number of manual controls has also been reduced compared to the flagship, but there’s still a lot to be desired.

To that point, the KeyLab Essential 88 mk3 includes the same screen as the smaller keyboard for navigating presets.There are also nine knobs and nine faders for controlling parameters

Additionally, you get built-in control scripts that work with many popular DAWs, such as Ableton Live. This allows you to do things like mix tracks using the built-in faders or stop and start recording from the controller itself.

There’s also a contextual button below the screen that provides more control over plug-ins and virtual instruments. You may notice that there are only 8 pads, but the KeyLab Essential Series lets you switch to a second pad for a full 16 pads. The keyboard features a hold function, new scale and chord modes, and an arpeggiator.

Finally, this keyboard comes with a ton of software to get started. The accompanying bundle includes Native Instruments’ iconic The Gentleman piano, UVI Model D games, a two-month subscription to Loopcloud, and a subscription to Melodics coaching software. As usual, you also get Ableton Live Lite and Arturia’s Analog Lab V.

We don’t know yet how much this will cost, but we contacted Arturia for pricing information. By comparison, the 61-key KeyLab Essential mk3 sells for $249, and the 49-key version costs $199. Additionally, the previous generation KeyLab Essential 88 was priced at $379, so expect it to fall within that range. KeyLab Essential 88 mk3 comes in black and white.
