OpenAI solves GPT-4’s “laziness” problem with new update

OpenAI said in a blog post that the updated GPT-4 Turbo “completes tasks such as code generation more thoroughly than the previous preview model, aiming to reduce the ‘lazy’ situation where the model fails to complete the task.”

However, the company did not explain the content of the update.

Some ChatGPT users have recently complained that the chatbot often refuses to complete prompted tasks, blaming this on a lack of updates to GPT-4. However, OpenAI’s update targets GPT-4 Turbo, a version of the more widely used GPT-4 that is trained on the latest April 2023 information and is only available in preview. Those using GPT-4 (which learns from data available before September 2021) may still encounter the same laziness issues.

OpenAI said in the post that more than 70% of people using GPT-4 through its API have switched to GPT-4 Turbo because of its updated knowledge base.

The company says it will roll out more GPT-4 Turbo updates in the coming months, including the general availability of GPT-4 Turbo with Vision. This will allow users to perform more multimodal prompts, such as text-to-image generation.

OpenAI also introduces smaller AI models called embeddings. OpenAI defines an embedding as “a sequence of numbers that represents a concept in content such as natural language or programming code.” This helps applications that use retrieval-augmented generation (a type of artificial intelligence that obtains information from a database rather than generate answers) to find relationships between the different pieces of content they are accessing.

These new models, text-embedding-3-small and a more powerful version called text-embedding-3-large are now available.
